The curriculum is designed to provide educators with online courses that are structured to ensure that future candidates will study the philosophical and theoretical foundations of curriculum development while gaining an understanding of instructional strategies that best address the needs of a diverse student population in the following specific content areas:
- Instruction, Learning and Assessment
- Minority and Urban Education
- STEM Education
- Music Education
- Elementary Education
Program Details
The master’s degree program in Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) is designed to provide educators with hybrid (blended) courses that are structured to ensure that future candidates will study the philosophical and theoretical foundations of curriculum development while gaining an understanding of instructional strategies that best address the needs of a diverse student population.
The program includes three areas of concentration:
- Specialization in Instruction, Learning and Assessment, or
- Elementary Education
- Music Education
The program is uniquely designed to meet the needs of individuals with a variety of career goals that range from those who wish to serve as curriculum generalists or specialists, district curriculum coordinators, school administrators, and classroom teachers to those interested in serving as non-school based curriculum designers or curriculum evaluators.

Those educators who pursue administrative roles will be provided with rich experiences through research and inquiry in an examination of diverse approaches to program evaluation and improvement. The programs allow individuals to enhance their current skill sets as related to instructional and assessment strategies, application of theoretical foundations of curriculum development, research and inquiry as foundations for data-driven decisions about curriculum and instruction, technology, and core principles of program evaluation and instruction within the specific content areas.
The 30-credit-hour program will employ a cohort model and may be completed in five semesters. Candidates seeking admission into the C&I program must meet the School of Graduate Studies and Research admission requirements.
The degree does not lead to initial state certification.
Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Graduate Program Admissions Requirements
Students seeking admission to the Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) program must meet the following minimum criteria prior to admission:
Applicants must have a minimum combined score of 283 from the quantitative and verbal sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The score report should be within five years to the application date.
Applicants must submit a personal statement describing the applicant’s desire to pursue
a degree in curriculum and instruction in order to graduate from the program.
The Graduate Admissions Office requires all applicants to use the online application portal.
PLEASE SUBMIT AN APPLICATION TO THE SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH BEFORE SENDING ANY OTHER REQUIRED MATERIALS TO THE SETEF DEPARTMENT.
Applicants must submit official copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts as well as transcripts for work completed in postsecondary institutions for which no degrees were awarded.
No prerequisites are needed.
While graduate assistantships are the ideal source of funding in graduate school, financial resources are limited. Applicants may apply for funding through the College of Education. Applications may be picked up in person from the College of Education Office of the Dean. You must be a fully, regularly admitted student to receive this funding. Visit the Graduate Studies and Research website to search for other funding options. Applicants are also encouraged to search for GA positions in administrative offices around the university such as residence halls, Student Recreation Center/Campus Recreation, athletics, and other service offices.

You must obtain an application from FAMU Graduate Studies and Research or you may obtain it online from its website.
You must submit the completed application form to Graduate Studies and Research along with an official copy of your GRE scores (to be sent directly from GRE testing services) and an official transcript from all previous colleges/universities attended.
