FAMU AIM Higher Program

From 1990 until now, the AIM Higher Program has encouraged middle and high school Black males to graduate from high school, pursue post-secondary education, and to achieve academic and personal success.

PURPOSE:

The program’s goals are to improve the academic performance of student participants, reduce chronic absenteeism, and increase the graduation rate of the lowest performers in Florida.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The AIM Higher Program is designed to assist students with completing high school and facilitate college admission, significantly increasing their chances of earning a college degree.

AIM Higher Program Information Session

The AIM Higher Program invites the FAMU Community, FAMU Alumni, parents, and students to join our information sessions on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 6 p.m., and Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 6 p.m. Join the orientation session and learn more about our on-campus summer institute. The virtual information session provides an overview of our program offerings and opportunities for the growth and development of males of color in grades 8-12. The on-campus stay is anticipated to begin on Sunday, June 9, 2024, and end on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

Male student, who, at the beginning of the summer session is in the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade; with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and has the potential to benefit from intensive instruction and mentoring, and a willingness to consider post-secondary education after high school.

Join the AIM Higher Movement!

Middle and high school students from Tallahassee and cities throughout Florida are selected for participation. Participating schools, agencies, and partners are asked to identify students enrolled in grades 8 through 12. Florida A&M University provides up to three weeks of intensely focused academic and personal developmental experiences students seeking a post secondary education during the summer. Courses, workshops and indirect instruction sessions may include English, Algebra I, Algebra II, Biology, Chemistry, and ACT/SAT Test Preparation, weekly character education seminars, workshops, and enrichment activities during the summer.

Direct & Supplemental Instruction

The AIM Higher Program provides academic enrichment that consists of classroom instructions with supplemental instruction and tutoring in the subject areas of mathematics, science and language arts. By concentrating on these subjects, program participants are better prepared to enroll in higher-level subject areas and also take advantage of dual enrollment opportunities. African-American studies and art curricula provide cultural awareness programming. They promote ethnic pride by increasing knowledge of academic, scientific and other accomplishments achieved by African-Americans known and unknown.

Mentoring

Mentoring is a core program component for the AIM Higher Program. Mentoring provides our young men academic and personal development through individual and group mentoring constructs. Per the National Mentoring Summit, “Research confirms that quality mentoring relationships have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations.” Mentoring empowers our young men to take control of their own personal growth and development with the guidance and assistance of our team.

Academic Planning

Developing a well-informed academic plan for life beyond high school is a requirement of AIM Higher Program participants. As students matriculate from middle school to high school, the AIM Higher Program provides guidance with fulfilling the requirements for successful secondary completion and academic planning for post-secondary success.

Mental Health Group Counseling

Program participants benefit from a group counseling approach through discussion. The scope of discussions can include but are not limited to: depression, oppositional behavior, antisocial behavior, substance abuse, adjustment to trauma and situational consistency.

Non-Cognitive Skills Development

Program participants learn about building effective habits, setting goals, improving health, and developing academic skills to address academic mindsets and academic behaviors. Participants are provided modules for learning through our AIM Higher platform.
